Alfalfa: the 'Queen of Forage Plants' – with a touch of nature and health!

Alfalfa, often regarded as the queen of forage plants, belongs to the legume family (you know, the clover species). But this noble lady doesn’t just have an impressive title; she also has a trick up her sleeve: she can naturally fix nitrogen in the soil thanks to small nodules on her roots. This ensures she always has enough nitrogen to keep her protein content nice and high—truly the diva of forage plants!

Why alfalfa is so great for your horse

Depending on the harvest time, alfalfa contains a rich mix of cellulose fibers, vitamins such as plenty of beta-carotene, vitamin E, various B vitamins, and important trace minerals. Sounds like a health boost for your horse, right?

This alfalfa pellet consists of finely ground leaves and stems of the whole plant—without any strange additives. It’s pure nature in a pellet! Whether you use it as a substitute for part of the roughage or as tasty soaked feed (of course soaked!), your horse will probably love it.

For horses, a guideline of about 5 to 10% of the ration applies—a perfect balance for that wonderful energy they need without overloading the stomach.

Alfalfa: the history of a plant with a rich heritage

Alfalfa is not just a modern discovery—no, this plant has an impressive history! It was first introduced to Europe by the Greeks and Romans and later brought to Spain via North Africa. But rest assured, Spanish alfalfa is not quite the same as the varieties we grow in northern regions. The Spanish varieties are not as protein-rich as our northern types—that makes our alfalfa a real powerhouse that you shouldn’t give to your horse in large amounts.

Note: because alfalfa is a rich source of nutrients, it’s important to feed it with care. Overdoing it is never good, even if your horse is an alfalfa lover!
