Because Groene Os likes to get the very best from nature, they have chosen organic psyllium fibers. This Psyllium Husk is therefore completely purely natural – no fuss, just pure nature! What many people don’t know is that there is a quality difference between the seed of the plant and the seed husk, also known as the ‘husk’. The husks have a stronger effect than the seeds (yes, they really are the superheroes in this story), but they are a bit more expensive because they need extra processing to unlock their magical properties.
Why are the husks stronger? Simple: they contain much more dietary fiber than the seeds. While the seeds act more like flaxseed in effect, the husks, due to their rich mucilage, ensure a smoother intestinal passage. And because the husks have an impressive water-binding capacity, they help your horse or pony really feel like it’s moving smoothly ‘around the bend’.
Psyllium Horse & Pony is of organic origin and top quality – only the best for your horse! It has a mild cleansing effect on the intestines and works wonderfully in combination with Vega Omega to remove sand from the intestines. It can also be used to make stool softer (with plenty of water) or to make loose stool a bit thicker – so it always works in your horse’s favor.
In addition, Psyllium Husk supports the intestines as a prebiotic, so the ‘good’ gut flora feels right at home. And as the icing on the cake, it slows down the absorption of carbohydrates, making it an excellent choice for horses with insulin resistance.
Psyllium Husk is often successfully supplemented with Digestivo Complex for an extra boost in gut health.
What is it good for?
Bowel movements
Psyllium fibers are bulk-forming, giving them a special dual function: they help make stool softer and also make stool that is too loose a bit thicker.
Cleansing the intestines
Psyllium seed has a mild cleansing effect on the intestines. Together with Vega Omega, it can be used to remove sand from the intestines.
Immune system
Psyllium helps beneficial bacteria feel more comfortable in the large intestine. This supports the immune system and helps keep harmful organisms at bay.
Absorption of fast carbohydrates
Because psyllium fibers form a gel-like mass within minutes and are indigestible fibers, some nutrients are absorbed more slowly. Examples include glucose and other fast sugars. Psyllium fibers can therefore be well used for horses with insulin resistance. It is important that the diet is first adjusted to better suit an insulin-sensitive horse!
